Okay, this episode begins with Coral clowning Mike. Okay,
the world did NOT take this the way it really was. It WAS
funny. Coral was being very playful. Sure, at the time, she
and Mike were not the best of friends, so I'm sure there was
that sting of enjoyment in teasing him, but it was NOT meant
to torment him. We were all like that with each other. It
seems as though the audience took this as Coral being a bitch,
and that's so annoying because she really wasn't.
This is an issue that sort of bothered me this whole season,
this Mike-is-a-victim thing that the storyboard people conjured
up out of thin air. Now, let me preface this with how I feel
about Mike now. I love him. Mike is a fantastic individual
who has a heart of gold. All he wants in life is to have a
good time and have everyone around him just as happy as he
is. He's a team player. He is kind and fun. He deserves everything
good that comes to him. I believe this whole-heartedly, and
I'm the first to defend him to anyone who doesn't know him
and assumes the worst; HOWEVER, there is a side to him that
I'm not crazy about, and I don't feel bad about not thinking
he's perfect. Mike can be annoying. (well, we all can be annoying.)
What I mean is that his energy level is 5000% all the time.
This is great when you're in the mood to be energetic. I like
to sit around and be calm just enough that Mike's energy can
be unnerving. He's always trying to make you laugh, which
is sweet and admirable, but have you ever had someone try
to make you laugh all the time when you're not in the mood
to laugh? Yeah, well this helps to explain our relationship
with Mike a bit. Also, the victim theme is that Mike is lonely
and isolated in that house. I think that is genuine, and I
do feel badly he felt that way, but I was bothered by this
plotline because we all felt that way. Malik wasn't D.J.ing
as much as he loves, I wasn't singing. Rachel, Coral, Nicole
- they were all out of their element. Everyone was. I think
we all felt that lonely, it wasn't just Mike.
Sometimes his trying to make you laugh can be offensive.
Well, it was at the time. I don't get offended by him anymore,
but at the time of the show, I admit that I was frustrated
and embarrassed sometimes. For example, one time in the subway,
a homeless man started making fun of us and giving us shit
because we were a bunch of red-cheeked children in our warm
and vibrant sweaters being followed by a camera crew. Mike
started to defend us to the man. We were telling Mike to shut
up and let it go, but he wouldn't. His intentions were good;
he didn't understand why this man was so angry, but Mike didn't
realize that each person has a history, some histories much
harder and sadder than others. He couldn't except that this
man was angry, and Mike didn't believe that it was fair to
be clowned by this guy. Life isn't fair, so let it go. Mike
tries to make anyone sitting beside him his friend, even on
the subway. Some people like it and talk to him, others are
quiet and weirded out in hopes that Mike will leave them alone,
but he doesn't. Are you getting a feel for what I'm talking
about with Mike?
Anyway, I applaud the storyboard for the cut of Mike saying
he won't let Coral change him and then he's sitting at the
salon getting a haircut. Brilliant and hysterical.
Nicole and Malik in a romance? Um
this is TOTAL bullshit.
This is where editing comes into play. "Nicole and I
are really attracted to one another," Malik says. Are
you listening to the cut in sound? That shit was all chopped
up.
Nicole and Rene? Whatever. That was one day, and we never
talked about it after that day. No one, especially Nicole,
can believe that made TV.
Okay, now this scene with all of us in the kitchen, the Black
History Month scene, people got all upset watching this, again
calling Coral a bitch. Are you kidding? This scene had me
cracking up. I was cracking up when I was there in that kitchen,
and I was cracking up when I watched it on TV. Here's something
that edited out a bit: WE WERE ALL LAUGHING. It was funny.
She wasn't being mean at all. I was sitting right beside her
in tears because I was laughing so hard. Another fucking Mike-as-victim
scene in the eyes of editors, well, NOT IN THE EYES OF THE
ROOMMATES. Well, again, Coral doesn't really like Mike much
at this point, so I guess Mike can't see it as playful like
we can. That's all I have to say about this episode.
